Karl Watson was born on March 27, 1981, in London, England. Growing up in a family that loved to travel, Karl caught the adventure bug early, going on trips with his parents and siblings. He studied music at university, which sparked his creative side, and later earned a postgraduate degree in Post-Production Editing at Bournemouth University in 2007. His early jobs included editing videos for financial companies at BrightTALK in London from 2011 to 2015, but his real passion was travel. A six-month backpacking trip in 2006 through Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and the USA hooked him on exploring, setting the foundation for his filmmaking career.

Rise to Fame

Karl started his YouTube channel, “Karl Watson: Travel Documentaries,” on January 22, 2010, with his first major video, “The Road Goes Ever On: Hong Kong to New York,” posted in 2013. Inspired by TV shows like Long Way Round with Ewan McGregor, he filmed a nine-month, 20-country journey with his friend James in 2013, editing it into an 11-episode series that snowballed to over 2.5 million views. His 2018 video “Backpacking Africa: South Africa, Namibia, Botswana & Zambia” went viral, showcasing his knack for capturing raw travel moments.
